Augustine started his brilliant career at Madauros,
He conceived a child in Carthage named Adeodatus,
Then he read Hortensius by Cicero
But the Skeptics didn’t sate his spiritual quest, so
But when he met Faustus, a doctor of their church,
His biggest questions went unanswered, so he stayed on his search.

Where he got beaten badly by his Greek instructor.
And excelled in speech-writing (his favorite, for sure).
And swore to learn all he could of Philosophy.
He started hanging ‘round the heretical Manichees.

Run Satan run, run Satan run
You better keep on rolling, ‘cause you’ll never get none
Of that salvation God promised to the faithful few.
But just when that’ll happen has got me on the edge of my pew.

Now all this time, his mother, Monica, had prayed for her son,
And his new teaching job transfered to Milan,
Inevitable conversion, which convinced his friends -----
To do the same. He and his mother had a vision, and then
Augustine mourned for his mother and the space she left lacking,
Became Bishop of Hippo and died dur’ng its sacking.

Praying for Augustine to meet with the Lord;
Where St Ambrose’s preaching got Auggie leaning toward
Nebridius, Alypius, Verecundus, one and all -----
She asked, “Why am I still here,” and caught a fever that fall.

Run Satan run, run Satan run
You better keep on rolling, ‘cause you’ll never get none
Of that salvation God promised to the faithful few.
But just when that’ll happen has got me on the edge of my pew.
