I went walking in the wasted city
Started thinking about entropy
Smelled the wind from the ruined river
Went home to watch TV

& it's worse when I try to remember
When I think about then & now
I'd rather see it on the news at eleven
Sit back, & watch it run straight down

Run straight down
Run straight down
I can see it with my eyes closed
Run straight down

We've been living in the shadows all our lives
Where it's stand in line & don't look back & don't look left & don't look right
So we hide our eyes & wonder who'll survive
Waiting for the night . . .

Fluorocarbons in the ozone layer
First the water & the wildlife go
Pretty soon there's not a creature stirring
'Cept the robots at the dynamo

& it's worse when I try to remember
When I think about then & now
I'd rather see it on the news at eleven
Sit back, & watch it run straight down

Run straight down
Run straight down
I can see it with my eyes closed
Run straight down

[“Run Straight Down” written by W Zevon, Zevon Music BMI, 1989

liner notes
September of 2003 saw the ends of both some of music's nicest fellas (Cash, Palmer) & film's most controversial auteurs (Riefenstahl, Kazan), with Zevon somewhere between those archetypes: the songwriting wonder boy from sunny Cali whose grin hid a view as murky as a black label whiskey. Originally covered for an upcoming tribute album from Wampus Multimedia, this post-apocalyptic tune is inexorably cinematic & intersects nicely with many of the themes of this album. “Rock Noir” indeedy.
