Of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Being our first foray into the Instant Classics’ video production, this was a more traditional and straightforward narrative than some, but it’s certainly one of the more complex in the level of compositing found objects. As the bibliography no doubt shows, a commanding amount of still life (or not-so-still life!) objects were drafted into service as subjects for animation. Much of these were chosen to conjure images from mid-50’s Florida optimism, but with the unsettling undercurrents that Vonnegut was cheerfully able to bring to surface in his novel. We set our song during the climactic sequence, in which our hero Dwayne Hoover has a mental meltdown in the lounge of a Holiday Inn, going buck-wild on the denizens of Midland City and ultimately injuring eleven hapless folks, plus himself. In a final act of merciful altruism, Vonnegut himself appears at the end and frees his many characters (some of which had been featured in several of his books) of their slavery to him. The visuals, in turn, represent an almost maddening level of kitsch, but with a hopefully unmistakable undertow of desperation. |
